Wheatstone, Gorgon maintenance workers threaten industrial action in stand-off with Chevron contractor Altrad

Maintenance workers asking for improved wages and allowances from Chevron contractor Altrad say they will move on industrial action this week if their employer doesn’t put forward a decent offer. The multinational oil and gas servicer is currently locked in negotiations with the Offshore Alliance — a partnership between the Maritime Union of Australia and Australian Workers Union — to pin down the terms of a new enterprise agreement. According to the Offshore Alliance, two proposed agreements have so far fallen flat, with one ballot only winning support from 3 per cent of workers and the other 11 per cent. It’s understood there about 140 people who work as mechanical technicians, electrical and instrumentation technicians, scaffolders, riggers, painters and plasterers being represented in negotiations. The last agreement is believed to have expired about six months ago, with talks ongoing since. Against the backdrop of discussions for a new pay deal is a finding last year by the Fair Work Commission that a “corporate shell” subsidiary of contractor Altrad had engaged in a “sham” agreement for workers on a Chevron site, triggering a further investigation into a series of workplace deals across the sector. This new agreement under negotiation covers all Chevron facilities including Gorgon and Wheatstone’s downstream and offshore platform. And the Offshore Alliance has declared it will file protected industrial action ballots this week, telling social media “Chevron maintenance workers deserve industry standard pay and conditions.” The oil and gas giant has not weighed in on the dispute, which marks latest development in an ongoing stretch of employee unrest in the WA oil and gas sector as unions look to pin down new agreements. Chevron and direct employees this time last year avoided an escalation to the Fair Work Commission after agreeing to terms set out by the industrial umpire that covered 350 workers. In August panel operators at Australian Gas Infrastructure Group’s Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline walked off the job amid a bitter dispute over pay amid a bargaining dispute. An Altrad spokeswoman said the company “will not be providing comment” in response to questions whether a new agreement was needed, or whether the company intended to put another offer forward.
