Barbie movie: Some critics say Greta Gerwig’s film is worthy of an Oscar
The verdict is on Barbie — and some critics insist it is Oscar worthy.
Reviewers say Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken Doll, should land the best song Oscar for his delivery of I’m Just Ken in Greta Gerwig’s box officer buster.
The story centres around Barbie being expelled from Barbieland for not being perfect.
She and Ken make a foray into the real world in a bid to find true happiness.
So does this pink-tastic cinema offering fly? Or is it a stinker?
Variety magazine’s social media editor Katcy Stephan posted after a screening: “Greta Gerwig delivers a nuanced commentary on what it means to be a woman in a whimsical, wonderful and laugh-out-loud funny romp. The entire cast shines, especially Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.”
Jamie Jirak of ComicBook.com said Gosling shines as Ken and should land a gold statue.
She posted: “Greta Gerwig somehow exceeded my expectations … Give Ryan Gosling an Oscar nomination, I’m dead serious!”
Collider writer Perri Nemiroff wasn’t so convinced of the attempts to put substance into Barbie’s story.
She posted: “I think the film serves Margot Robbie’s Barbie and her journey especially well, but there are other characters experiencing important arcs that needed more screen time to really dig into and explore to the fullest.”
Screen Rant’s Joe Deckelmeier said he had low expectations but said Gerwig smashed it out the park.
“’Barbie’ caught me off guard & I mean that in the best way possible. It’s funny, bombastic, & very smart. Greta Gerwig aims for the fences & hits a home-run. Margot Robbie’s performance is great & Ryan Gosling & Simu Liu are pure entertainment! The whole cast is brilliant!,” Joe posted.
The rave reviews, will come as a huge relief to Robbie, who was braced for people to hate her portrayal of the famous toy doll.
“We, of course, would want to honor the 60-year legacy that this brand has, but we have to acknowledge that there are a lot of people who aren’t fans of Barbie,” the 33-year-old Aussie sweetheart said before the verdicts rolled in.
“And in fact, aren’t just indifferent to Barbie. They actively hate Barbie. And have a real issue with Barbie. We need to find a way to acknowledge that.”
Fans said producer Mark Ronson’s previous praise for Gosling singing his track I’m Just Ken wasn’t overhyped, with one tweeting “Grammy incoming”.
Ronson had said of Goslings singing: “He was just nailing it because he’s such an amazing actor. I hadn’t also figured that, of course, he would sell this song better than anyone because he is Ken.”
La La Land singer Gosling thanked his co-star and director for bringing out his inner Ken doll.
“I only knew Ken from afar. I didn’t know Ken from within, and if I’m being really honest I doubted my Ken-ergy,” he said. “I didn’t see it, but Margot and Greta, they conjured this out of me somehow.”
