Burrata Bar Perth review: April Ooi visits Aberdeen Street restaurant for gnocchi, focaccia and doughnuts

Rule one of my friend group’s dinner logic is if burrata’s available, we will order it. Rule two is that we can only order one of each dish — you know, for variety’s sake. The result is a catfight over everyone’s favourite plump ball of creamy goodness. Burrata Bar in Northbridge seems to have solved our problem, with each dish on the menu coming with a big old ball of burrata. Tucked into a quiet lot on Aberdeen Street is a takeaway/outdoor eating set-up that is going to be perfect as we head into the warmer months. The menu is simple, with a choice of gnocchi, focaccia sandwiches and salads, but it’s made exciting thanks to the not-so-secret ingredient of burrata. We ordered the monthly special, a carbonara gnocchi ($28) featuring creamy traditional sauce with a generous pile of crunchy bacon-style pancetta. I’ve tried their usual range of gnocchi before but the pancetta was the missing piece of the puzzle. I wish they’d make the carbonara gnocchi a permanent item on the menu, but the idea of monthly specials also excites me (as long as there is meat involved). We also tried the maiala focaccia ($19), which was mortadella, rocket, burrata and smashed pistachio sandwiched between two olive-oily slices. Each bite was a good balance of salt, bitterness and creaminess and the focaccia itself was fragrant, squishy and not overly crunchy. I prefer my focaccia with visible salt, but this was still a very decent batch. There were a few desserts from the cabinet to choose from, but we decided to share a strawberry jam doughnut ($7.50). It was predictably sweet with a tart jam filling and while I thought it was a tad tough, it was already dinner time so we understood it was likely past its prime. We also managed to squeeze in the golosa bowl ($17), a salad that was 80 per cent meat and cheese. The vegetables were hidden under a generous hill of prosciutto and a big lump of burrata. The tomato, rocket and olive oil together was a simple but killer combo. You’d think it’d be cheese overload, but to be honest we can’t get enough of it. Burrata Bar is a genius idea and a must-visit for all cheese lovers.
