Suncorp calls out water damage repair costs and lithium battery fires as it warns of higher premiums

Customers insured by major brands such as AAMI and GIO are facing further premium hikes to cover the rising cost of repairs to homes damaged by water leaks and fires. Suncorp has flagged its general insurance premiums will rise by “mid to high single digits” this financial year even as though its own insurance cost pressures have eased in line with falling inflation. The insurer is blaming “sticky” costs in areas including car repairs and water damage in homes, as well as the increased severity of fires in homes, partly influenced by the prevalence of lithium batteries. Announcing a better annual profit of $1.19 billion on Monday, Suncorp chief executive Steve Johnston called out higher claim costs to cover more serious damage resulting from cracks in ageing water pipes, noting that with more open plan homes, the repairs were often more extensive. He also that some damage was being detected later because refrigerators were increasingly installed behind kitchen cabinetry and more people had returned to their offices after COVID-19. “Some of that damage is being left for periods of time, which means mould sets in and severity (of damage) picks up,” Mr Johnston said. In addition, house fires while not more frequent were costlier. “Lithium batteries are more prevalent in homes now than they have ever been, and (they) act as an accelerant,” he said. “And the other factor we’ve seen across the past 18 months is that houses are (being) built closer together,” Mr Johnston said. Subsequently, there was the increased risk of fires spreading to adjacent homes. Now focused on insurance after the sale of its banking arm to ANZ, Suncorp attributed the 11.7 per cent rise in annual net earnings to better margins, increased investment returns and reduced losses to natural hazards, including storms. Mr Johnston said the results represented “strong increases” on the previous year, but noted that “it’s important to point out the past three years have been very challenging for all insurance companies, with inflation, natural hazards and a fundamental reset in global reinsurance markets”. The tough market has resulted in escalating insurance premiums for householders and motorists, with latest Insurance Council of Australia data showing the nation’s home-building insurance premiums rose an average 13.9 per cent in the year to March 31, followed by a 12.7 per cent rise in motor insurance and 3.7 per cent rise for household contents premiums. “No doubt inflation has moderated but some of the supply chain challenges are still there,” Mr Johnston said on Monday. Suncorp said its banking arm, sold to ANZ on July 31, contributed $379 million of profit, down from $470m previously. The $4.1b in proceeds from the divestment are expected to be returned to Suncorp shareholders in the first quarter of 2025. Mr Johnston noted the year had been tough on customers “amid ongoing inflationary pressures and the continuing impact of severe weather events, particularly in Queensland in late-2023”. “Over the past five years we have managed around 700,000 natural hazard claims at a cost of more than $9 billion,” he said. “This step-up in the frequency and severity of weather events has impacted the cost of reinsurance and the amount we set aside in our natural hazard allowance.”
