The new Competition packages for the Audi RS4 and RS5 promise improved handling, better performance, stealthier looks, and more noise.

The 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine is unchanged, though, and is rated at 331kW and 600Nm.

It’s hooked up to an eight-speed automatic transmission with revised software that reduces shift times, and an all-wheel drive system.

Expect to hear a more vicious growl from the V6 engine as the Competition pack includes a new sports exhaust with matte black exhaust tips, and removes around eight kilograms of noise reduction insulation.

Other changes include a dynamic steering ratio, recalibrated ABS setup, a retuned Quattro Sport differential that places “more emphasis to the rear”, and ceramic brakes.

Audi says the Competition models require two fewer metres when coming to a complete stop from 100km/h.

The RS4 Avant Competition comes with matrix LED headlights, while both RS5 body styles have laser light units instead.

Among the car’s many options is an adjustable coil-over suspension system which sits 10mm lower to the ground than regular RS4/RS5 models, and can be lowered a further 10mm by the driver.

Also available are milled 20-inch alloy wheels with stickier Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres, carbon-fibre exterior trim pieces, and seat fabric partially made from recycled PET plastic bottles.

All of these changes mean the RS4 Avant Competition Plus has a 0-100km/h time of 3.9 seconds, a 0.2s improvement.

The RS5 coupe and liftback Competition Plus models manage the same feat in 3.8 seconds, or 0.1s better than their regular counterparts. The electronically limited top speed has been raised to 290km/h on all Competition models.

The RS4 and RS5 Competition packages will be in European showrooms from July this year, but we’re waiting to hear back about Australian availability and pricing.
