Mercedes-Benz unveiled its third-generation CLA this week, which is first launching as an electric vehicle (EV) before mild-hybrid petrol powertrains join the lineup later this year.

However, absent from the range so far is a higher-performance AMG version, providing buyers an even hotter version of the four-door ‘coupe’.

Autocar reports that’ll change next year, with an electric Mercedes-AMG CLA45 under development and on the way.

According to the publication, the CLA45 is set to gain axial-flux electric motors (developed by Mercedes subsidiary Yasa), first due in the flagship electric GT 4-door and GT SUV before trickling down to the more affordable AMG model.

Sources have told Autocar the CLA45 will feature a tri-motor setup, developing up to 373kW – a healthy increase on the 310kW output of the current model’s turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.

While this is down about 100kW on the Tesla Model 3 Performance, axial flux motors offer far greater levels of torque than conventional motors, with a sacrifice on overall power outputs.

The torque-vectoring capabilities of the tri-motor layout is also said to help Mercedes-AMG make the electric CLA45 more dynamic, with a drift mode planned to carry across from the current petrol-powered model.

AMG models also often look sharper than their Benz counterparts, however the CLA45 is expected to go one step further by being available with an active aerodynamics package.

This will reportedly include an electrohydraulic rear wing which can deploy at high speeds, providing additional downforce. It’s also expected to be able to act as an air brake.

As detailed earlier this week, the new CLA is the first model to be based on the new Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA), which will support future internal combustion engine- and electric-based powertrains.

The flagship CLA at first will be the CLA350 4MATIC with EQ Technology, with its dual-motor powertrain developing 260kW and 515Nm. It tips the scales at 2135kg.

Mercedes-Benz claims it can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds. Expect an AMG version to be significantly faster.

The new CLA has grown across every external dimension compared to its predecessor.

Australian deliveries of the electric CLA are due to begin in the second half of 2026. It’s not yet clear whether an AMG version would arrive at the same time or a later date.
