Perth Breakfast & Brunch: Nazzar in Mt Lawley is a terrific new addition to one of Perth’s best brunch strips

One of the perks of food reviewing is discovering a hidden gem: the shabby-looking venue in the improbable location that’s far better than it has any right to be. But, sometimes, you find the opposite: the not-so-hidden gem, the venue on the beaten track, the great cafe just where you’d expect to find a great cafe. Nazzar is the latest excellent addition to Mt Lawley’s Beaufort Street strip: a road with no shortage of terrific breakfast joints. Head in one direction and you’ll hit Mary Street Bakery. Head in the other and you’ll reach Soho Lane. You can’t throw a keep cup in this neighbourhood without hitting a decent brunch spot. That doesn’t make Nazzar’s arrival any less welcome. And, while it might be cheek-by-jowl with plenty of great joints, it’s doing something different, with a menu that skews Middle Eastern and an aesthetically delightful space, capped off by one hell of a beautiful wall mosaic. Nazzar offers batch brew, which is usually a reliable sign of a cafe that likes its coffee. This coffee, using Padre beans from Melbourne, will like you back: it’s terrific. Nazzar also does a decent range of teas by the pot and smoothies. A pot of Indian black tea is delightful and a smoothie dubbed “the warrior” is great — just don’t ask me how banana, dates, honey and peanut butter are going to turn me into Achilles. The menu at Nazzar is one of the most tempting I’ve seen in a while. It’s all buttermilk chicken croissant that, crispy falafel this and a fried chocolate brioche that can’t possibly taste as good as the image those three words conjure up in my mind. My husband and I opt for a crab omelette and the corn fritters, but I will be back for that brioche on a day when my blood sugar is feeling dangerously low. Making a good omelette at home isn’t that hard. So, if you’re going to pay $25 for an omelette at a cafe, it has to be pretty glorious to make it worthwhile. Nazzar’s crab omelette has just enough going on to reassure the most accomplished home cook that they couldn’t, or at least shouldn’t, try to replicate it. The chilli sambal brings the heat, while the citrus labneh cools things down. Fresh mint is a nice touch. The Persian corn fritters are another welcome surprise. The fritters are crispy and well-seasoned, but it’s the herbed labneh and hummus underneath that makes them sing. Throw some feta into the mix and it’s a seriously cheese-forward dish. Watch out for the chilli jam on the side, though: it’s not shy. The Beaufort Street strip attracts a regular rotation of cafes and restaurants that open with a bang and close with a whimper. It’s a competitive environment in which diners don’t have far to stroll if they don’t like what’s on offer. Nazzar deserves to survive and thrive.
