The Kimberley Boxing Championship has proven to be a huge success with patrons filling out the Broome Civic Centre to cheer on local fighters as they stepped into the ring with some of the best amateur boxers in the state.

Held on December 3, the Kimberley Championship featured 21 bouts with fighters travelling from as far as Alice Springs for the first sanctioned fight night to be held in Broome in years.

Two Broome locals, 15-year-olds Baden Trunfio and Aidan McKenna went blow for blow in the main event in an exciting and adrenaline-pumping final event for the night.

McKenna went into the first round holding nothing back, throwing combos at Trunfio and landing some well place strikes despite Trunfio’s defensive jab and one-two counter combos.

Trunfio opened up in the second round letting the combos fly as McKenna kept up his pace from the first round, throwing combos to match Trunfio’s newfound fervour.

In the third round, all bets were off as the two boxers let the haymakers fly, leaving Trunfio with a bloody nose and the crowd up off their feet screaming.

But ultimately Trunfio proved himself to be the more precise striker, chanting with fists raised as he was named the winner of the title match.

Broome’s favourite boxer Luke Kent also entered the ring on the main fight card, going up against old nemesis Eric Kyanga.

It was a thrilling fight, with expert technical proficiency on display with the two fighters evading and countering each other’s combos with ease.

But Kent proved he was the more dominant fighter once again, cornering Kyanga on the ropes and throwing an endless flurry of punches at the Geraldton fighter in the second and third rounds to take home the belt for his division.

Another highlight from the night was when Aaron Fury from Mandurah defeated Shane Lynch in a dominant display, knocking out the 40-year-old Broome local in the first round.

Broome Boxing Club and Kimberley Championship organiser Conor Gerrard said the proceeds made from the fight night will be put back into Broome Boxing Club to keep it running into the future.
