Broome public library launches dementia-friendly memory cases to improve services for people with disability

The Broome public library has introduced dementia-friendly memory cases, now available for loan, to inspire recollections, foster social connections, and provide support for individuals living with dementia and their families. The launch coincided with the International Day of People with Disability on December 3, celebrated with a morning tea where speakers shared heartfelt stories and insights into the impact of dementia on families and communities. Library co-ordinator Alison Morris spoke about the initiative and its role in supporting individuals with dementia while strengthening family understanding. “We’re always trying to do better for people with disability accessing our facility, so (December 3) was a great way to highlight awareness of people living with disability and the fact that we’re always striving to do better,” she said. “One of the things that I wanted to achieve was to bring greater attention to dementia and to improve our services for people with dementia. “So things like the memory cases that will engage them in social conversations will help the families understand what’s going on for their relative and to provide for them with other things.” Supported by the Department of Communities and Developmental Disabilities WA, the themed memory cases are thoughtfully curated with nostalgic items designed to evoke memories and spark meaningful interactions. Kimberley Aged and Community Services remote care co-ordinator Solange Rousset, who also shared personal insights and statistics into the significance of dementia awareness and support, praised the library’s efforts. “Because (dementia) is a growing disease, it’s good for people to be aware,” she said. “I think it’s really important that people reach out and use the support that is available, because it’s too hard on your own. “What the library did is amazing and for inviting people to be able to come in here instead of being isolated with no knowledge.” Longstanding library employee Peter Moore and his carer Nicole Payten attended the launch of the memory cases, with Ms Payten highlighting the inclusive nature of the event. “Pete loves to be social — that’s one of his goals with his NDIS care plan is to be social and in the community, and being the day of International Day of People with Disability, we just wanted him to come and celebrate,” Ms Payten said. “I loved it, I knew a lot about dementia previously but it was good to get some of those facts and figures. And these boxes are such a great idea.” “It was a great day of celebration and it’s nice to be included in it.”
