A mechanical fault is believed to have caused a car to be set ablaze in Broome this morning.

The fire was said to have started at 7:10am on Lorikeet Drive underneath the bonnet before engulfing the entire car in flames.

Witness Ian Glew said he was on his way to work when he noticed the beginnings of the blaze.

“I saw some flames coming from under the bonnet when the driver pulled over,” he said.

“He was trying to get a garden hose to put it out but it stopped just short of the car.

“I told him to evacuate, shut the bonnet down and I closed the road so nobody would drive past and we called the fire brigade straight away.”

Mr Glew said he believed a slight leak in the fuel line started the fire.

Local firefighters have since extinguished the blaze.
