Council votes on new track location
The Shire is hoping to speed up plans to progress the relocation of Broome’s motorsport facility by applying for land tenure over its preferred site.
The council has been working with Landcorp and the Broome Motocross Club for the past four years to relocate the motocross and speedway clubs to facilitate the expansion of Broome North.
Two sites were earmarked in 2015, one on the corner of Cape Leveque Road and McGuigan Road (lot 351), and the other at the intersection of Cape Leveque Road and Broome Road (lot 591).
During site technical investigations, lot 351 was found to be environmentally constrained and the Shire was recommended to look at establishing the recreational motorsport facility on lot 591, which is vested with WaterCorp.
Last year, councillors endorsed the selection of a 30ha portion of lot 591 as the preferred location.
In November, WaterCorp granted consent for the Shire to seek a management order for the area from the Minister for Lands on the condition that the Shire relinquished its MO over lot 351.
At last week’s ordinary council meeting, councillor Harold Tracey said the time had come for the council to agree on the location and move forward with the project.
Councillors voted 7-1 in favour of authorising the Shire to relinquish its MO over lot 351 and to seek an MO for the 30ha portion of lot 591.
