Derby/West Kimberley Shire requests extension to Buccaneer Archipelago marine park consultation period

Derby/West Kimberley councillors have voted to request an extension to the public submission period for the Buccaneer Archipelago marine park proposal. Shire Councillors opted at last month’s meeting to request more time for public deliberation beyond the May 21 deadline. The public submission period involves consultation with stakeholders including traditional owners, the community, and commercial and recreational anglers. Shire of Derby/West Kimberley president Geoff Haerewa said the request was “more to do with government processes” than expressing reservations about the proposal. “The council were initially excited to be a part of discussions, but we just weren’t involved,” he said. “We want more time for discussion and more understanding about the potential impacts.” The proposal will cover about 660,000ha in the West Kimberley within Bardi, Jawi, Mayala and Dambimangari sea country. The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions is working together with traditional owners to co-design the marine parks with an aim to protect environmental and cultural values.
