The Bureau of Meteorology is warning Kimberley residents to prepare for severe weather, with heavy rainfall and flash flooding expected to hit the region over the next 24 hours.

Ex-tropical cyclone Lincoln is expected to cause heavy rainfall in East Kimberley today (February 20) and will extend into the northwest tomorrow (February 21), according to the Bureau.

Locations that may be affected include Halls Creek, Kununurra, Wyndham, Mount Barnett, Troughton Island, and Warmun.

Flash flooding may occur, with six-hourly rainfall totals between 50 to 80mm and 24-hour rainfall totals between 80 to 120mm likely.

Isolated 24-hour falls reaching up to 200mm are also possible.

Severe heavy rainfall in coastal areas may develop late this afternoon as ex-tropical cyclone Lincoln approaches the coast.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services is warning residents to find safe shelter, unplug electrical appliances, not to use landline phones during lightning, to be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines, and keep away from flooded drains and waterways.

If your home or property has significant damage, call the State Emergency Service on 132 500.

The next severe weather warning will be issued by the Bureau at 5pm.
