UPDATE: DFES has cancelled the severe thunderstorm warning after the Bureau of Meteorology advised any storm activity has moved offshore at 2:20pm.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has advised residents across the Kimberley to take action and stay safe with severe thunderstorms approaching the region.

People in Beagle Bay, Cape Leveque, Cockatoo Island, Kuri Bay, Lombadina and Mitchell Plateau have been urged to take caution in an alert issued earlier this afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology detected radar and satellite imagery showing a line of thunderstorms lying approximately 60kms east of Broome, extending along the coast and moving west-northwest at 70km/h.

Gibb River Road has been closed in both directions between Kalumburu and Great Northern Highway due to flooding.

DFES is monitoring the situation.
