A local community arts organisation is set to soar into the future with a big helping hand from the State Government.

Broome’s Theatre Kimberley secured almost $30,000 in grants to continue travelling across the Kimberley region telling local stories through the art of circus, dance puppetry and music.

The funding, through the State Government’s Commercial Development Grants Program, will help guide Theatre Kimberley’s future direction and commercial sustainability.

Theatre Kimberley business manager Jael Johnson said the organisation was “very excited” to receive the grant, along with the continued support of the Tate Family Foundation and the Broome community.

“It is very difficult to secure funds for costs that are not strictly restricted to artistic projects, and Theatre Kimberley is thrilled to have been successful,” she said.

“The incredible ongoing and unwavering involvement and support allows us to continue to offer a myriad of exciting arts opportunities.

“These include weekly circus classes and other exciting circus activities, showcasing community talent at our large public performances, outreach visits to remote schools, towns and communities, bringing highly regarded artists and trainers to the Kimberley, and so much more.”

Ms Johnson said in order to continue the wide range of creative opportunities on offer, Theatre Kimberley had identified the need to carefully strategise and ensure financial sustainability.

“We look forward to using the money to continue to create arts opportunities that showcase the incredible local talent of Broome and Kimberley people,” she said.

Minister for Culture and the Arts David Templeman said he was aware of the importance of a thriving arts scene to the fabric of local communities as a theatregoer and performer himself.

“It is essential that organisations with local content continue to operate for the good of the whole community,” he said.

“Congratulations to Theatre Kimberley and I can’t wait to see your fantastic future work.”

Kimberley MLA Josie Farrer said it was a fantastic result for Theatre Kimberley, a “popular and well-loved Broome institution”.

“It is wonderful to see the McGowan Government investing in local arts organisations and boosting the creative industries,” she said.
