A multi-media production depicting the story of the Karajarri people had the audience in thrall at Broome Convention Centre.

Performed by local artist Mervyn Mulardy (aka Yatangal) and created in collaboration with Dr Mark Bin Bakar, Life Cycle featured traditional and contemporary music, dance and storytelling against a background of visual effects.

Told through the eyes of Yatangal, a Karajarri man and language speaker, the story explored the “Life Cycle” of his people from celebrating traditional language and culture, the disruption of colonisation and discovering a new Dreaming, with a sense of optimism for the future.

Broome audiences were among the first to be given an insight into Karajarri Country and its people, with plans for the production to go on a national tour and to also be taken to the UK, Europe and China.

Mr Mulardy said he was proud to be able to share the story of his people to a wider audience.

Producer and director Mark Bin Bakar said it takes a special talent and experience to rise up in the contemporary arena and share one of Australia’s old and sacred languages and cultures with the world.
