‘Looks like ISIS’: Kimberley kids crowded on stolen ute in Fitzroy Crossing compared to terrorists in court

A West Kimberley Magistrate has likened an alleged large group of juveniles in a stolen vehicle to a terrorist group riding into town after four members of the alleged group appearing in court. Four teenage boys, aged between 14 and 15, appeared in Broome Magistrate’s Court via video link from Fitzroy Crossing on Monday where they stood accused of taking part in two burglaries and driving a stolen car recklessly. While two of the four boys were granted bail with strict conditions such as a night-time curfew and being barred from entering the Fitzroy Crossing township or associating with each other, the other two were remanded in custody until future dates as they allegedly “could not be trusted on bail”. A photo tendered to the court by police allegedly depicted up to 15 juveniles riding in the stolen ute, with some riding in the rear tray and others riding on the roof with their legs hanging over the windscreen. Upon looking at the picture, Magistrate Stephen Sharratt said it “looked like ISIS was riding into town.” Magistrate Sharratt also shared concerns about the alleged common occurrence of groups riding in stolen vehicles. “It is only a matter of time until one of these cars too over and someone is killed,” he said. It was alleged the four boys had broken into a property in Fitzroy Crossing where they allegedly stole cigarettes, a wallet that contained $114 in cash and keys to a Toyota ute. It was further alleged the group used the stolen car to drive around the town in a reckless manner before allegedly breaking into the Bayulu Store and stealing a number of food items. The boys are due to appear in Fitzroy Crossing Children’s Court in separate hearings throughout February.
