The Looma Eagles played an excellent game against top team Broome Towns at the weekend, coming close to taking down the dominant side after a ferocious clash down at Father McMahon Oval.

So far this season, Looma has emerged as a dark horse vying for the top spot between reigning premier Cable Beach and the recently formidable Broome Towns, with the out-of-town side racking up six wins so far this season, including defeating last year’s runner-ups the Derby Tigers twice in round one and nine.

But the Towns came firing out of the gate, scoring two goals which Looma matched before Towns surged ahead with another three goals to close out the first term in the lead, 5.1 (31) to 2.2 (14).

Looma’s excellent defence kept a relentless onslaught from the Towns attackers at bay in the first half of the second term, with their attack managing to slip through the only goal of the quarter to keep Looma within striking distance, 5.2 (32) to 3.7 (27).

A sloppy third quarter saw Looma drop back and Towns, showcasing how they have dominated the competition so far this season by scoring four goals while Looma only managed to slip one past the Towns defence, 9.3 (57) to 4.7 (51).

Looma launched a counterattack, kicking three goals to close out the final term with 13-point margin, 10.5 (65) to 7.10 (52), a massive improvement over the last time the two teams clashed in round three when Towns came away with a 100-point victory.

Meanwhile at Nipper Roe Oval, the Derby Tigers clinched the win from the Bidyadanga Emus in a close match, 9.4 (58) to 6.15 (51).

Later that afternoon, Cable Beach destroyed the Peninsula Bombers in a one-sided affair on Father McMahon Oval, 20.11 (131) to 6.3 (39).

And on Thursday night under the Father McMahon Oval lights the Broome Bulls took the win from the Broome saints by 19 points, 8.12 (60) to 6.5 (41).

In the women’s competition the Broome Towns also clinched the win from the Looma Eagles, 4.5 (29) to 1.4 (10).

And in a reverse of the clash in the men’s competition the Broome Bulls took down the Broome Saints, 5.2 (32) to 2.2 (14).
