Man jailed for vicious assault
A man smashed his niece over the head several times with a plank until she collapsed after she stabbed him in the thigh for slapping his partner across the face, a sitting of the District Court in Broome was told today.
Mark Wungundin, 48, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm after the alcohol fuelled incident in Broome in August last year.
The court heard the niece suffered serious blood loss and head injuries including a large hematoma and a gash behind her left ear that required her to be taken to hospital by ambulance.
In sentencing District Court Judge Fiona Vernon said it was the most serious offence to date of Wungundin’s long criminal history, which dates back to January 1998.
She sentenced Wungundin to three years in jail, back dated to August 2018.
Wungundin would have to serve at least 18 months behind bars before being eligible for parole in February, 2020.
