Broome sporting clubs will have another floodlit field from mid-next year after local contractor Able Electrical was appointed to carry out upgrades to Nipper Roe Oval.

The $1.4 million eight-pole field lighting system will see the AFL preferred standard of 150 lux met, which the Shire said would provide ample illumination to the sports field and spectator areas.

Tipped to be completed by June 1, 2022, the new night-time venue would be ready for the peak Broome sports season.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said upgrading the venue was identified as a high priority project in the Shire’s Sport and Recreation Plan, with grant funding secured to carry out the project.

“The project will enable continued growth of Broome sport, which has seen large increases in participation in many sports, particularly in women’s football, over recent years,” he said.

“The Shire strives for continuous improvement in the sport and recreation space and embraces the passion Broome has for its love of sport.

“The Shire always looks to support local businesses where possible and it is great to be able use a Broome contractor to complete this important project.”

The upgrades are part of a renewed focus on sporting facilities in the Kimberley town and will be followed by a new skate park, motocross track and sports courts — all due to be completed in the next three years.
