A new guide full of useful tips to help Australians living in the North West prepare for the upcoming cyclone season is now available.

Released on December 6, the new guide is a collaboration between Building and Energy WA and Australia’s Cyclone Taskforce and includes actionable steps for longer-term cyclone preparation as well as tips for before, during, and immediately after a cyclone.

WA’s North West is Australia’s most cyclone-prone region with the cyclone season typically running from November to April with an average of at least two cyclones a season.

Those in the region are urged to have a cyclone plan ready which should include a place to shelter and an emergency kit.

People are also urged to stay away from glass doors and windows during a cyclone and to look out for any potential electrical, gas, and infrastructure hazards.

Building and Energy WA executive director Saj Abdoolakhan said the guide aimed to provide a handy reference to help protect people and property.

“As we saw with Tropical cyclones Damien and Seroja, the impacts of cyclonic winds and rainfall can be devastating and long-lasting for affected communities,” he said.

“In addition to our own advice, helpful checklists summarise key information from organisations such as the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, James Cook University’s Cyclone Testing Station, WorkSafe, Consumer Protection, and WA’s Department of Health.

“Building and Energy will continue to work with these organisations in responding to and safeguarding communities against severe weather events.”

The “Cyclone safety around your home” fact sheet can be found on the Building and Energy WA website.
