Budding billfish fisherman turned out in their scores to compete in the second annual Broome Billfish Classic from September 9 to 14.

The Overall Champion boat was Team Billistic (Ben Moore, Chris Tanti, Ashley Ramm and Jack Furzer) who came out with three marlin and 3000 points to win the top prize of $2000 plus a bunch of fishing gear, with the team also winning first place in the boat over 7m category.

The Bite Me Tackle team (Simon “Tacka” Heard, Steve “Triggy” Trigwell, Jacob Giles and Chris “Critter” Rushford) took out the top spot in the boat under 7m category, bringing in two marlin weighing more than 100 kilograms worth 2000 points.

Steve Wokner won the prize for catching the biggest marlin on a Catbo lure and youngster Nash Greenhill caught the biggest marlin out of the juniors with a fish weighing around 45 kilograms.

Broome Billfish Classic coordinator Simon Heard, who won the prize for first marlin tagged on a Catbo lure, said the competition’s second year had been a resounding success.

“It was really good, we got down some really impressive numbers, we raised 71 Marlin, hooked 46 and tagged 16,” he said.

“Our conversion rates were pretty terrible but we were fishing in pretty ordinary conditions.

“I would like to send a massive ‘thank you’ to all the amazing sponsors that supported this tournament.”

The Broome Billfish Classic is planned to take place again in late September next year for its third annual competition.
