A high-tide closure, additional signage and ranger patrols during peak hours will form part of increased security measures at Broome’s new Town Beach Jetty after a number of rescues in recent weeks.

The measures will see Town Beach Jetty’s lower portion, which is semi-submerged during peak tides, closed to the public on tides higher than seven metres.

Additional signage and ranger patrols will also be put in place, with Shire of Broome President Harold Tracey reminding residents swimming from the jetty was illegal.

“This decision has not been made lightly, however there are continued cases of jetty users ignoring signs and placing themselves and others at risk by swimming from the jetty,” he said.

“The latest incident took place on Wednesday afternoon, where a young girl was almost swept away with the current and needed to be rescued.

“The Shire would particularly like to thank those people that have assisted with the rescue, placing themselves at risk to assist.”

The changes will take place with immediate effect.
