The first full calendar year of junior soccer in Broome was given a traditional Broome goodbye on Friday with a day of games and barbecues on Gantheaume Point beach.

The Broome Soccer Association has struggled with numbers in recent years, but the formation of the junior development program, which features U9, U11 and U13 teams, helped foster the town’s very first year-round program.

To celebrate the successful year, a beach soccer day was organised at Gantheaume Point, challenging young players to show their skills on arguably the hardest playing surface — sand.

Along with two pitches and hours of playtime, a free barbecue was organised so the kids could enjoy their final meeting for the year.

Supported by Football West, the program aims to piece together teams for next year’s North West Championship in June.
