Wear and tear forces closure of Derby jetty for ‘major’ repairs during tourist season
Derby’s popular jetty will be closed for more than one month during peak tourist season to undertake repairs to corroded bars.
The Shire of Derby-West Kimberley confirmed the closure, slated for six weeks from May, on Wednesday which will prevent access to the northern abutment used for fishing, tide and sunset watching by residents and tourists.
Kimberley Port Authority will during this time undertake major repairs to three bays subjected to rust and corrosion from strong winds and salt.
Shire of Derby-West Kimberley acting chief executive Wayne Neat said the repairs were needed to ensure long term safety for users.
“We know how much the people of Derby love their jetty and that means we need to look after it for the next generation – it’s a really special place for locals,” he said.
“We sincerely apologise for the extended closure, but in the long run these repairs will make the jetty more resilient to the harsh sea and weather conditions of the coast.”
A physical gap will be created on the jetty during the repairs where by the damaged sections are replaced in whole, making any public access an absolute no-go.
Mr Neate said the Shire hoped to have the jetty reopened by mid-June.
