Footy-mad Broomies will be forced to wait a little longer for bouncedown thanks to tropical cyclone Ilsa, with the WKFL preseason carnival, slated for Saturday, cancelled because of the weather.

Before the 2023 WKFL season starts on April 29, organisers had set up a carnival between all 16 men’s and women’s teams in the league to showcase what the upcoming year in local footy has to offer.

But as players were preparing to dust off their football boots, the announcement was made via the Broome Saints Facebook page that the carnival would have to be cancelled because of the severe weather brought on by tropical cyclone Ilsa.

“Unfortunately, the preseason carnival has been cancelled this week due to weather,” the statement said.

“A big thanks to Cable Beach Football and Sporting Club for their efforts in trying to get this happening.”

Set for kick-off at 9am on Saturday, April 15 down on the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre ovals, the event was meant to offer fans a taste of what was to come and serve as an epic opener to the 2023 season.

Now WKFL fans will have to wait until April 29 to get a glimpse of some local footy action, with Cable Beach and the Broome Saints set to clash in the first official game of the 2023 season.
