Busselton to take centre court in action packed South West Peel Regional Championships

Eight divisions, nine associations, 53 teams, 650 players, parents and volunteers.

The numbers behind the South West Peel Regional Championships netball carnival show Busselton is set for a bumper weekend of activity.

The competition will take place this weekend at Busselton’s Lou Weston courts and Lois Hannay pavilion with 650 players, coaches, umpires and volunteers expected to take part.

Nine associations from Serpentine to Bridgetown will compete across eight junior divisions ranging from 12-and-under mixed to 16-and-under girls.

Busselton Netball Association head of carnival committee Tania McLeod said the atmosphere was always electric.

“I love it, the atmosphere is absolutely fantastic,” she said.

“It’s great, fun netball and I look forward to seeing all the girls compete.

“All the girls, they play so well together, there’s some great bonding happening over the weekend.”

This is the second year in a row Busselton has hosted the championships which usually alternates with Bunbury.

Due to redevelopment works happening in Bunbury, the event will take centre stage in the Capes again.

Despite a relatively grim forecast for the weekend it won’t deter the 53 teams competing.

Ms McLeod said the event was only possible through community spirit.

“We’ve got some great people in the community that help and volunteer as well to make sure there’s enough food there for the kids in the canteen,” she said.

“The coaches and the teams support the team managers and they do a fantastic job, the umpires do an amazing job at this event as well.

“It just takes a big community of people to come together to make it happen.”

Last year, Bunbury, Bridgetown and Mandurah left as the most successful teams with two division wins.

Busselton will be hoping to improve on their 12-and-under A-division second place.
