Asha Lilly Glaskin could face jail for glassing ‘love rival’ Taiya Sampson in face at The Landing, Alkimos

A former childcare worker who glassed a love rival at an Alkimos bar during a heated argument could end up behind bars as a court was told the argument between the pair erupted over a man. That is what Joondalup Magistrates Court was told at the latest appearance of Asha Glaskin who unlawfully wounded Taiya Sampson at The Landing in August last year. The 20-year-old was due to be sentenced on Wednesday, but her matter was adjourned to allow Magistrate Raelene Johnston to review CCTV of the incident, which was also played to the court. During the hearing, the court was told Glaskin was sitting at an outdoor table with her friends when an argument erupted between her and Ms Sampson. A police prosecutor told the court Glaskin threw the contents of her wine glass over Ms Sampson, prompting her to stand up with the argument continuing. She said a bystander then tried to intervene but Glaskin reached past her and began pointing in Ms Sampson’s face. The pair continued to argue then Ms Sampson pushed the bystander away before striking Glaskin who then retaliated by striking Ms Sampson in the face with her wine glass before the bystander intervened again. The court was told Ms Sampson needed plastic surgery to her face after sustaining a 5cm cut. Glaskin’s lawyer, Olivia Russell, told the court while the facts were accepted by her client it was Ms Sampson who threw the first drink adding it can be seen in the CCTV. She said her client and Ms Sampson were known to each other telling the court that two weeks prior to the incident Glaskin had ended her relationship with a boy who had been dating both of them at the same time. Ms Russell also told the court the week before the incident Ms Sampson, her mother and the boy had been kicked out of the venue for trying to attack Glaskin. In arguing for a fine or community-based order and spent conviction, Ms Russell told the court her client had recently been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression with her psychologist also finding she had undiagnosed ADHD. She also said the incident was not pre-meditated nor was it prolonged saying it was spontaneous and that her client tried to engage in victim-offender mediation but Ms Sampson was not willing. “She feels terrible for the complainant and is scared about the outcome,” Ms Russell said. “She has received messages from people exposing her occupation and name. She also resigned from her job as a result of the media attention.” Ms Russell told the court her client wants to continue counselling with a report saying if she continued to engage she would be at a low risk of reoffending. The police prosecutor said only a term of imprisonment was appropriate and compared the case to that of Perth model Eva Grace Scolaro who was jailed for 18 months for glassing a woman at the Library nightclub in 2009. Ms Johnston said on the face of the facts she was not satisfied a fine or community-based order was appropriate but also said who threw the first drink was relevant. She adjourned sentencing until next week.
