Mark Anthony Unchango Junior: Alleged rapist told victim ‘I just want you’ during train station assault

A sexual predator was out of jail for just over a month when he allegedly followed a woman from a train station, dragged her into the bushes and violently raped her as she begged for mercy. The “brutal” details and evidence against Mark Anthony Unchango Junior were revealed in Joondalup Magistrates Court on Monday when the accused unsuccessfully sought bail. Mr Unchango is a registered sex offender who was on a post-sentence supervision order for sexually assaulting a teenager at the time of the alleged offence. Police allege he followed a woman in her 40s to a bus stop as she walked home after the pair left Whitfords Station about 9pm on December 19. The pair had a brief conversation, in which she told him a bus was coming in 10 minutes, before he allegedly tried to sexually assault her. Mr Unchango then punched her in the face and pushed her onto the ground and dragged her into nearby bushes, police say. It is alleged he tried again to sexually assault her and the woman pleaded with him to stop, offering him her phone and other valuables. “I just want you,” Mr Unchango allegedly replied before punching her again and raping her. Police say that each time the woman screamed or tried to escape, he hit her again. Eventually the woman flagged down passing cars. The woman told officers she scratched her assailant’s face. When police spoke to Mr Unchango, he is alleged to have had scratch marks consistent with what she described. DNA from a blood stain on his pants matched the victim, as did a swab from his genitals. Mr Unchango was released from prison on November 14 after serving a sentence for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old. He is facing charges for the assault as well as for breaching a supervision order imposed after he completed his sentence. Applying for bail, Mr Unchango’s lawyer said his client — who appeared via video link from Hakea Prison — had anxiety and anger issues due to trauma from domestic violence he suffered as a child. He said his client’s mother had a hole in her lung and was “close to death” and that Mr Unchango wished to communicate with her from home detention. Magistrate Evan Shackleton said there were no bail conditions he could impose that would sufficiently reduce the risk of the accused reoffending. Mr Shackleton said the “serious” charges would likely result in a long stint in jail. “The case against him is very strong, very strong,” he said. Looking at photos of the victim’s injuries, Mr Shackleton observed the attack “must have been brutal”. The magistrate denied Mr Unchango’s bail application and adjourned the case to January 20.
