Child protection workers agree to State Government’s pay offer after strike action across WA, Mid West

Child protection workers, including those in Geraldton, have accepted a State Government pay offer, ending months-long industrial action across WA. Last September, more than 30 Geraldton workers in the sector went on strike to fight for better pay and conditions. They alleged more than 40 children and families throughout the Mid West and Gascoyne did not have a case worker and most child safety investigations in the region failed to be completed within the 30-day benchmark, with only 17.8 per cent finishing within that time. On Tuesday, more than 95 per cent of the Community and Public Sector Union/Civil Service Association agreed to the State Government’s offer of a 12.5 per cent pay increase over three years. The offer included a qualification allowance to support unqualified workers, and enforceable overtime when caring for children out of hours. Industrial Relations Minister Simone McGurk said she was pleased an agreement had been made. “The child protection system in WA is underpinned by a quality, dedicated and passionate workforce,” she said. “This agreement seeks to further embed their opportunities for career growth and recognise the importance of the work they lead. “I would like to congratulate the CPSU/CSA on their effective advocacy and considered engagement through this process.” CPSU/CSA branch secretary Melanie Bray said it was a significant advancement for the sector which would help support vulnerable children and families.
