Geraldton’s Mitchell Street Community Garden set to be relaunched with Bunnings workshop

Members of the Geraldton community are encouraged to take part in the relaunch of a community garden in the city’s north.

The Mitchell Street Community Garden in Spalding is set to reopen, after being part of the City of Greater Geraldton’s revitalisation project in the area.

As part of the reopening, Bunnings will host a workshop at the launchlater this month, teaching people about growing vegetables and herbs, as well as explaining composting.

City of Greater Geraldton mayor Jerry Clune encouraged the community to get involved, saying there were a many benefits.

“It is no secret that planting, tending and growing your own food has a multitude of physical and mental health benefits,” he said.

“We are extremely fortunate to have a fantastic climate here in the Mid West for growing all sorts of produce, and this is an outstanding opportunity to learn from experts in the field.

“So, whether you are a newbie wanting to sow your first seeds or an experienced gardener looking to pick up a few tips, I urge everyone with an interest in gardening to join us at the Mitchell Street Community Garden for a horticultural experience not to be missed.”

The Spalding revitalisation project has been years in the making and was included in a $9 million package to upgrade a number of facilities at the community centre, AMC Park and public housing in the suburb.

These works were completed in December 2023.

The Mitchell Street Community Garden workshop will take place on Friday, July 19, from 10.30am.
