Walkaway Cup socials: More than 1000 gather at Geraldton Turf Club to soak up festive spirit

A big crowd at Geraldton Turf Club relaxed further into the break between Christmas and the new year as they soaked up the festive energy at the Walkaway Cup.

More than 1000 punters showed out in full force for the December 27 race meet, which closed out the first half of the racing season.

The day featured seven blockbuster races with onlookers revelling in the festivities the day after Boxing Day.

Everyone was catered for at the Walkaway Cup, with kids being treated to attractions such as pony rides, a bouncy castle and face painting.

Punters were also treated to a live performance from Geraldton duo, Shanghai.

On the track, jockey Tash Faithfull claimed an impressive treble — her second in a row at Geraldton, firmly cementing herself as a proven performer in the Mid West.

Race five, the Walkaway Cup, was claimed by trainer Tony Scally and his six-year-old gelding Hard Questions. Jockey Chris Nicoll gave the gelding a 10-out-of-10 ride, winning by three quarters of a length.

The day proved to be a winner with all involved basking up the sun on a 32C day during the festive period, watching on as the best that the Mid West has to offer in racing battled it out on the track.
