Students from Harvey’s WA College of Agriculture have enjoyed a successful showing of their skills at a number of agricultural competitions this month.

Students trekked to the Wagin Woolorama earlier this month, with 36 students participating in a range of events from cattle handling, Merino and meat sheep judging, wool judging and sheering.

Their standout efforts enabled victory in the Young Judges 2025 competition.

Harvey Ag School students Georgie Ward (Cardup), Andi Osborne (Dumberning), Lydia Cargill (Bunbury), Eva Kowald (Cherry Tree Pool) won Young Judges 2025 Competition at the Wagin Woolorama.

Just a few weeks later, the college continued its winning streak at the Harvey Beef Gate 2 Plate Challenge at Willyung Farms in Albany.

The school entered two teams of eight students to compete in the interschool competition, where they engaged with industry professionals, attended informative presentations, and demonstrated their knowledge in a beef industry quiz where Team 2 claimed overall victory.

College principal Stephen Watt said they were thrilled to have the students perform so well at both competitions.

“One of our strategies to support students’ learning and to engage them with industry is to have them compete at various agricultural competitions,” he said.

“We encourage students to have a go and then support them with training.

“Some students have never judged before, so just to have them out of their comfort zone is a great result but to win is even better.

“Both the Harvey Beef Gate 2 Plate and the Wagin Woolorama Schools Challenge events take a team effort, which reinforces our school focus on communication skills and working in teams.

“The recent wins are an indication of our students’ skill but also wouldn’t happen without the training expertise and commitment of our staff.”
