Bloodcurdling screams heard as boy found dead in car boot
A 10-year-old boy has died after becoming stuck in a car boot in regional Victoria.
It’s understood the boy suffered a suspected heart attack on Sunday afternoon after becoming stuck inside a car boot near Shepparton, 181km north of Melbourne, while his mother was resting inside.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Gange St in Mooroopna and performed CPR, but the boy could not be saved.
It’s understood the boy, who had a fascination with cars, took the keys belonging to an adult and climbed into the boot of the car, becoming trapped inside.
His mother was inside the house at the time, but noticed the keys were missing and ran outside, where she discovered her son in the car.
About 3.30pm, neighbours reported hearing a bloodcurdling scream coming from down the street.
According to the Herald Sun, neighbours reported seeing the car doors and boot open, with one resident telling a concerned neighbour “don’t go over there”.
The mercury reached a maximum of 35.5C in Shepparton on Sunday.
Condition can become especially hot inside a car, with temperatures climbing up to 70 per cent higher in an hour.
“Kids in cars is not a good mix,” a neighbour said.
They added the tragedy was “very sad’, especially so close to Christmas.
Another local, who spent the day in Cobram, returned home to find police and SES on the street, who informed him the boy had been inside the car boot “for a few hours”
The boy’s death is not being treated as suspicious and the circumstances into his death will continue to be investigated.
Police are preparing a report for the coroner.
