Broome International Airport will beef up its security after vandals smashed and broke into several parked cars overnight.

Ten vehicles located in the long term car park area were targeted and had their windows smashed sometime between 9.30pm and midnight.

Broome Police Senior Sergeant Brendon Barwick said a group of juveniles were believed to be responsible for the attack.

“Police spoke to them on a number of occasions earlier on in the afternoon,” he said.

“It is believed the same group may be responsible for some minor damage caused at the high school around midnight.

“Forensic officers have attended and gathered evidence in an attempt to identify the offenders.”

He said police were contacting vehicle owners to ascertain if any property had been stolen.

In the meantime, Sen Sgt Barwick said parents needed to take responsibility for their children’s actions and know where they are at all times.

“I ask the question why are the kids wandering the street after dark in the middle of the night,” he said.

“Police will return children to their addresses when we come across them. However, on many occasions they beat us back onto the street.”

BIA general manager Paul McSweeney said the airport was “extremely concerned” about the incident and extra security measures would be implemented.

“It is an isolated incident for the airport,” he said.

“We have good security measures in place and are working closely with police to strategize how to approach this moving forward.

“The travelling public can be assured that we will be taking extra security measures.”
