Athletes wanted for new club

Gareth McKnightBroome Advertiser

Broome is set to welcome its first senior athletics organisation, with the newly formed Kimberley Athletics Club ready to fill the void.

The brainchild of local fitness and athletics enthusiasts, the club will hold an information day on Saturday, August 24, at the Boulevard Shopping Centre from 9am to 1pm.

The club’s committee includes Sam Newton as president, Vicki Cobby as treasurer, Sally Reynolds as registrar, Melissa Cream as secretary and Rebecca Love as marketing manager.

After the information day, a free come-and-try day has been provisionally arranged for Saturday, September 7, at St Mary’s oval from 8am to 11am.

With Cobby competing at both the State and National Masters Athletics Championships this year, and Cream’s son Cheyne selected in the under-16 WA team for the National Championships, the pair came up with the idea of forming the club.

Newton said everyone from 13 years old up to master athletes were welcome to join.

“From talking to people in the community, we feel there is a real need for a senior athletics club in Broome, and the feedback I have received so far has been very positive,” he said.

“People of all levels of experience and fitness levels are welcome, whether it be from a recreational or competitive perspective.

“The purpose is to fill the gap in the sporting club community, and in the long term have athletes representing the club at interstate competitions.”

All events are available for members to take part in, including running, throwing, hurdling and jumping disciplines.

The club welcomes all new members and committed volunteers.
