Baby croc gives resident a fright

Broome Advertiser

The mysterious arrival of a baby freshwater crocodile at a Cable Beach residence caused a stir for one Broome local last week.

Lauren Mackay-Wiggins was stunned to find the 40cm hatchling sauntering into her laundry basket as she went outside to do the washing.

Ms Mackay-Wiggins said she initially thought the reptile was a bluetongue lizard, but soon realised it was a crocodile.

The shocked resident said she ran inside and told her flatmate.

Ms Mackay-Wiggins alerted her neighbour, who contacted Kylie Sherwood from Chelonia Wildlife.

The group worked together to capture the small reptile, while it hissed and snapped furiously as it was wrapped in towels before its jaws were taped together.

A staff member from Malcolm Douglas Wildlife Park was contacted and identified the reptile as a freshwater hatchling before it was taken away.

The hatchling now resides at the wilderness park.
