Baseball WA eyes Broome little league

BEN JONESBroome Advertiser

Broome has been targeted as part of a program for junior baseball or little league to expand into regional Western Australia.

Baseball WA is looking for people in Broome who are willing to become part of a local league with the aim of starting the junior program before expanding into senior competitions in time.

Regional development co-ordinator David Hayes said Baseball WA acted as the support network which helped to kick-start regional associations by providing training and funding.

Mr Hayes said T-ball was usually the route into baseball for junior players and the State T-ball association could also provide start-up help to individuals looking at forming a local association.

He said children usually started out with T-ball at five or six years-old before moving into baseball in an under-13 competition.

He said the association already had little leagues up and running throughout the State including three associations in the Pilbara as well as across the Midwest and the Perth area.

While plans for expansion into the Kimberley are still in their infancy Mr Hayes said there was considerable opportunity for crossover games between associations in the North West.

Baseball WA is also linked with the worldwide baseball association with little league teams from WA part of an international competition with championships in Asia and the US.
