Beach backs blunt Bulls goal-getters
Reigning West Kimberley Football League premiers Cable Beach put in their best performance of the season last Saturday, comfortably defeating Broome Bulls 18.7 (115) to 5.9 (39).
The Bulls had won their previous two matches by big margins, and were boosted by the return from injury of captain Tim Richter.
Despite this, Cable Beach dominated the encounter from the first minute and restricted the talented Bulls forward line.
Scott Clark kicked three first-quarter goals to put his team in the ascendency, and Cable Beach were up 3.4 (22) to 0.3 (3) after a one-sided first 20 minutes.
Bulls got off the mark in the second quarter with two goals from Ben Sarsfield, but Beach responded with five of their own to have a considerable 8.5 (53) to 2.5 (17) lead at half-time.
The premiers kicked four goals in the third quarter, compared to Bulls’ three, but Beach put in a dominant final 20 minutes, kicking six majors and restricting their opponents to none.
Clark ended up with five goals, while Sonny Dann contributed three six-pointers. Severo Corpus, Jo Dann and Nathan Green kicked two goals apiece.
Bulls forwards Sarsfield and Sam La Porta were the top goalkickers in the competition before the game, but were limited to five goals between them in their side’s heavy defeat.
The Bulls were missing Hayden McLeod from their midfield, and this told as Cable Beach dominated possession.
Cable Beach president Mick Albert felt his side put in a rounded performance.
“We started well and all-in-all we are pleased with a strong four-quarter showing,” he said.
“Our midfield played well to get first hand on the ball and that limited the number of chances Bulls had in attack. The forward line marked strongly and took their opportunities well.”
