Big Science stars gain distinctions
Broome Senior High School’s brain-box students are putting the school on the map, thanks to their recent national successes.
Year 8 students Noah Chapman, Anna Mildenhall and Amos Anderson came top of the class and the country in the Rio Tinto Big Science competition, held earlier this year.
The trio competed against 31,000 students nationwide, scoring top marks in the hour-long test.
The paper consisted of 30 multiplechoice questions, covering a range of science-related topics.
Noah Chapman was one of 50 students across the country to score a perfect 30, earning him a visit to Canberra next month to attend a national presentation ceremony at Parliament House. Noah said he was looking forward to his trip and meeting members of parliament.
Students Anna and Amos respectively scored 29 and 28, and were awarded with high distinctions.
Principal Saeed Amin said the entry of students for national competitions was a proactive way to challenge students and “raise the bar” of personal and academic excellence, on a national level.
Mr Amin said the students’ results validated Broome Senior High’s commitment to deliver a high level of education, and ensured the needs of “top-flying” students were met.
Since the competition launched in 1995, registrations increased, with entries from all States of Australia and its neighbouring countries, in Asia.
