Boat size no object for Broome anglers

Gareth McKnightBroome Advertiser

The fact the boat motor is broke at the moment, I needed to oil a deck and pack up my office archives.

I was feeling less then fresh from my big day out at the races , I knew the moment I got up last Sunday morning that my day was going to be less than perfect, as a textbook perfect Broome day greeted me.

In between my dad giving running reports on the hundreds of trailers double parked at Broome’s favourite launching areas, I managed to get through, just, while everyone else was enjoying the perfect fishing day.

My neighbour arrived home from fishing and took great pleasure in rubbing in how awesome it was as he unloaded a nice mixed bag of cod, snapper and perch caught about 12 miles offshore.

Then just to top off my less than great day, I received a text message “Sails going off”. I was like a kid that just dropped her ice cream.

Sailfish have turned up in numbers and some smoking sailfish action was had by a group of anglers last Sunday.

Jeff Cooper broke the news to me there were “never-ending black masses cascading onto teasers in glass calm conditions”. One boat raised more than 40 fish and managed to release 12 while other boats also released sails in double-digit numbers.

Boat size didn’t seem to matter as Phil Leach in his tinny Tidechaser nailed a double header, a first for his vessel and another group of anglers had huge success catching sails on fly.

Jeff would not divulge the exact location of the smashing action but I am going to go out on a limb and guess the place is somewhere in and around the Willie to Barred Creek area.
