The men’s division of Broome Soccer Association finished the first round of its five-a-side futsal campaign last Wednesday, with a total of 55 goals scored over four exciting matches.

Bottom Feeders completed a clean sweep of the first round, making it seven wins in a row with an 11-2 victory over Random Casuals.

The game started evenly, with the league leaders struggling to get into their usual fast pace, and skilful opponents Antonio Guerra and Adam Wooldridge providing a threat in attack for Random Casuals.

Bottom Feeders led the encounter 4-2 at the half-time whistle, despite not being at their best.

However, the victors’ class told in the second-half as Sandy White inspired his side to a glut of goals and another victory.

Midfielder Francis Johnston returned from injury to bag two goals in the win, however influential defender Nelson Okonkwo picked up a knock during the encounter.

Second-placed Warranjarri Wednesday maintained their pressure on the table-toppers and boosted their goal difference with a comprehensive 15-1 win over Hard Bodies.

The defeated team were missing some of their key players, and as a result were put to the sword by the title challengers.

Mike Doyle picked up the fairest and best award after helping himself to six goals.

Alex Irving played well for Hard Bodies and scored a consolation for his side after a mistake by Wednesday goalkeeper Ray Ilott.

Racing Guantanamo and Champagne Football were expected to provide a close encounter as the teams are evenly matched — however the latter dominated the game and won 9-3.

Racing were boosted by the return of attacker Colm O’Leary, but had no answer to the team spirit of Champagne Football.

Lawrence Elsey netted twice for the victors and picked up the fairest and best award.

Finally, Broome City edged a close game against Sporting Guantanamo 8-6.

Sporting are a team for the future with a number of impressive youth players in their ranks such as Tremayne Tisulu and Prashant Basnet.

The teams will replay the fixtures once more to determine the winners of the competition.

In the women’s competition there were victories for Broome Heart and The Distractors in two hard-fought and exciting games.

Broome Heart beat Big Reds 2-0, with Emily Fleay influential in her side’s victory.

The Distractors overcame Disco Ninjas 6-3 in a fast-paced encounter.

Monica Sullivan played a substantial role in the win, scoring four goals and being awarded fairest and best.
