Bottom Feeders remain top of the ladder
The battle for the Broome five-aside soccer tournament title is gearing up to be a two-horse race, with Warranjarri Wednesday and Bottom Feeders continuing strong form with victories in round six.
Wednesday took on Racing Guantanamo at Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre on Wednesday, April 10.
The favourites ended up winning a close encounter 10-7 — however, they had to fight back from a shock 6-1 deficit at half-time.
Neil Winstanley inspired his Racing side to a strong start, and scored five goals over the course of the game.
However, Wednesday staged a second-half comeback, with Keith Anderson hitting the back of the net six times.
Bottom Feeders made it six wins from six games with a comprehensive 10-3 win over Hard Bodies.
The match was neck-and-neck at half-time, with Hard Bodies’ direct approach combated by Bottom Feeders’ slick passing game in a contrast of styles.
The table-toppers started the second 20 minutes of the clash well, and wave after wave of attack resulted in a comfortable Bottom Feeders win.
Broome City won a close encounter against Champagne Football 5-2, and had goalkeeper Ben Kenney to thank for the victory.
In an end-to-end battle, Kenney pulled out a host of excellent saves to keep his team in the lead and ensure victory.
He was awarded fairest and best.
Dennis Routman and David Lowman both netted twice for the winning side, while Andy Baker bagged a consolation brace for Champagne Football.
Finally, Sporting Guantanamo recorded their first win of the campaign with a 6-3 victory over Random Casuals.
The game was finely poised at the interval with the score tied at 3-3.
However, Guantanamo rallied in the second half to win.
Andy Webster scored a hat-trick for the victors.
The next games will be the last in the first round of matches, before the fixtures are repeated.
Sporting Guantanamo will tackle Broome City, while Champagne Football go head-to-head with Racing Guantanamo.
Bottom Feeders will be eager to complete a perfect first round of games when they take on Random Casuals, while Warranjarri Wednesday face Hard Bodies.
