Breakfast marks 20 years

Broome’s Community Resource Centre has committed to reaching out to more people in the Kimberley as it took part in its Statewide network’s 20th anniversary celebrations last week.

Centres across WA held a celebratory breakfast simultaneously broadcast using the latest video conferencing technology.

The occasion was an opportunity to highlight the network’s achievements and developments since it first opened its doors in 1991.

Broome CRC, formerly Broome Telecentre, has come a long way since its humble beginnings by providing the community access to technology and assistance with education, training and employment.

There are 12 centres based in the Kimberley and established facilities in more than 100 communities throughout WA.

Minister for Regional Development Brendon Grylls joined in the celebrations via satellite from Perth and congratulated staff on their achievements.

Members of local organisations were also invited to the event at the Broome branch.

Broome committee member John Collins said the WA Community Resource Network continued to play a pivotal role in the community through its range of services, particularly for people in remote communities.

“People can access government services, electronic banking and other resources,” Mr Collins said. He said the hub also accommodated Broome’s transient clientele.

“We offer service to travellers – from young backpackers to grey nomads – with our technology including our wireless hotspot,” he said. Earlier this month, Broome CRC was a successful recipient of the Shire of Broome’s Community Sponsorship Program and received almost $5000 to go towards the development of a new website.

Mr Collins said the E-Community Broome website would provide comprehensive information on local organisations to internet surfers.

The project will also give members of organisations the opportunity to assist with editorial content for the website.
