Broome Basketball Program shoots for success

Gareth McKnightBroome Advertiser

The newly founded Broome Basketball Program, in conjunction with Special Olympics WA, held its first session for youngsters last Monday.

The program will run at BRAC on a weekly basis during school terms and encourages children and teenagers with intellectual disabilities to take part in sport.

The first hour of the session was dedicated to children aged six to 12, with the second hour focused on those aged 12 and above.

The program puts an emphasis on skills, teamwork and inclusion and has had a positive response in its fledgling days.

Program co-ordinator Melinda Knox said she was happy with its start and encouraged anyone interested to get involved.

"The sessions give the kids of Broome the opportunity to participate, build confidence, have fun and be active," she said.

"The kids enjoyed it straight away and the feedback from parents so far has been great."

Knox also suggested other sports could be incorporated in 2014 as the program grows.

Tarkin Barker, 10, is one of the children involved in the program and his mother Sonia said she felt it had been a real benefit for her son. "It is great for social skills and Tarkin has made friends instantly," she said.

"The program helps him to build confidence, achieve success and learn skills that are transferable for the future."
