Broome businesses and organisations that employ emergency services volunteers were presented with awards at a morning tea recently.

The WA Volunteer Employer Recognition Program aimed to recognise the efforts, contributions and support many local employers provided to DFES by allowing their volunteer staff to attend incidents during working hours and assisting the community in times of need.

Some bosses also support their volunteer staff by allowing them time off to attend DFES training courses, enabling them to increase their skills, knowledge and training in areas such as firefighting, road crash rescue, storm damage response, search operations and working within an incident management team.

The Statewide program has three award levels: bronze, silver and gold.

Participants are judged on the level of support or assistance that the employer provides to their volunteers.

Broome Senior High School and Laurie Hicks both won gold and Kimberley Employment Services took out silver.
