Broome charity takes time out to help Feed The Little Children

It was the day before Christmas ... and generous donations of food items from Broome Advertiser readers resulted in 29 households receiving bulging hampers, along with Christmas dinners and presents for more than 140 Broome children.

Local charity Feed The Little Children distributed the hampers on Christmas Eve, having made them up from more than 400kg of non-perishable food items collected at the Broome Advertiser office in the weeks leading up to the festive break. Items were also collected at Roebuck Primary School.

FTLC was also partnered on its Christmas food run by Kimberley Squadron NORFORCE volunteers with gleefully decorated vehicles, and the Broome Scouts, who had also been busy collecting and wrapping Christmas presents for children of all ages, from fluffy toys to books and games.

Broome Scouts leader Kevin Rogers, also a NORFORCE volunteer, said being involved was great for the Scouts individually, each earning “community” badges, and as a whole, because it was likely to be just the start of a great relationship with a worthwhile local charity.

On regular food runs for local children in need – now bi-weekly – FTLC volunteers distribute up to 170 meals they have cooked and packaged earlier in the day, at the St Mary’s College hospitality facility.

But on Christmas Eve the children had a special treat – roast chicken dinners, which were purchased at a discount from Chicken Treat Broome.

FTLC founder Clint Durham said the Christmas food run had been a great demonstration of what was possible when the community got behind a good cause.

“The volunteers did an awesome job, as they do every week,” he said.

“We’ve got a very generous community here in Broome when it comes to children – that’s been demonstrated through the money, donations and time that people are donating. It is fantastic to see from a relatively small community the amount of support coming forward.

“We look forward to expanding even more in the new year to support as many kids as we can.”
