Broome prepares to play some polo
Pinctada Cable Beach polo — the only one of its kind in Australia — will explode into action this weekend with quality matches and entertainment.
One of the highlights will see indigenous stockmen from two Kimberley teams take on each other, as well as a professional team from India clashing with some of the best players in Australia.
The event kicks off on Saturday morning and will deliver two days of action-packed high-quality polo to Cable Beach.
Introduced by Marilynne Paspayley in 2010, the event was initially designed to bring the tourist season forward with a unique event.
“The understanding is that tourist season starts in June with the Broome races, but half of the year is gone by then,” she said. “I wanted to create an event which suits Broome, something unique to be put on in one of the most beautiful places.”
She said the extraordinary conditions of Cable Beach made Broome the ideal place for the sport to be played.
“We have expanses of flat sand here on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world,” she said.
“Our tides are so high and low, creating a surface which is sufficiently compacted to be suitable for horses.”
A lively DJ set from Daimon Downey, formerly of Sneaky Sound System, will keep the atmosphere pumping over the weekend.
Delivering tunes in the VIP marquee on both days of the event, Downey said he couldn’t wait to party with the people of Broome. “If anyone wants to come into the VIP area and have an awesome time with me, we can dance all day,” he said,
“I seriously love Broome and the people this sport attracts, you get the biggest billionaires and the biggest fans and those who just love to have a good time.”
Downey said Cable and Bondi beaches were completely different worlds.
“Bondi you’ll find hipsters and cool cats, whereas at Cable Beach everyone you see is just relaxed and chilled, the sand and sea is about all they have in common,” he said.
