Broome residents lose locks for charity

NICOLA KALMARBroome Advertiser

A cohort of brave Broome residents went under the razor on Sunday to raise hundreds of dollars for the Leukaemia Foundation.

This year the foundation’s biggest fundraiser, World’s Greatest Shave, was scheduled on St Patrick’s Day at the Roey, where a handful of plucky punters placed themselves at the mercy of special guest DJ Janic.

Grandmother Anne Marie (Mieke) Reynolds, 54, shaved off her dyed locks and raised almost $1000 — with additional funds yet to be counted. Ms Reynolds gave a “humble thank you” to everyone who had supported her.

She said every last cent made a difference to the lives of people affected by blood cancer.

Twelve-year-old Broome boy Raf Jess also took to the stage to shave his thick mop of hair and raised about $300.

His mother Suzanne Jess said she was proud of her son and said it was good for young people to support a charity.

Unlucky local Francis Johnston, egged on by his friends, had his back waxed in the name of charity.

Other locals also took to the stage after registering on the spot.
