Broome to celebrate special Women's Day

NICOLA KALMARBroome Advertiser

Liberation and celebration will be at the heart of this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) as Broome marks the day’s 100th anniversary.

To mark the occasion, major fundraising events will be held, including a special social gathering at Town Beach, an art exhibition and Broome’s famous Wimmins Song event.

Everyone has been invited to celebrate the achievements of women and look towards the future.

The IWD committee is working with various organisations including Kimberley TAFE, Broome Circle, Marnja Jarndu Women’s Refuge, Healthway and the Art House to host the community events.

At Town Beach on Tuesday, March 8, there will be an afternoon of entertainment, including guest female speakers, music and activities.

Meanwhile, artists can submit a piece of work for this year’s exhibition, running for its fourth year. The theme this year is: What does being a woman mean to you?

Celebrations will finish on a high note with the annual Wimmins Song at Gecko Bar, featuring lively performances from local talents such as Naomi Pigram, Briony Taylor-Brooks and Kerrianne Cox.

Committee member Louise Middleton said the event was about celebrating women and what they do, as well as highlighting issues that needed to be addressed.

“It’s important for women to be in a safe and secure community, who have access to justice,” she said.
